The key equity barometers continued to declined further in mid-afternoon trade. The Nifty further slipped below the 19,550 level. Auto shares declined after rising in the past two trading sessions.
At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 549.31 points or 0.83% to 65,566.79. The Nifty 50 index lost 179 points or 0.91% to 19,537.45.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.99% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index shed 0.22%.
The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1,581 shares rose and 2,032 shares fell. A total of 146 shares were unchanged.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Auto index fell 1.17% to 16,092.20. The index added 0.38% in the past trading session.
Ashok Leyland (down 2.82%), Mahindra & Mahindra (down 2.67%), Sona BLW Precision Forgings (down 1.26%), MRF (down 1%), Bharat Forge (down 0.86%), Tata Motors (down 0.84%), Samvardhana Motherson International (down 0.82%), Maruti Suzuki India (down 0.76%), Hero MotoCorp (down 0.7%) and Bosch (down 0.7%).
Numbers to watch:
The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper added 0.73% to 7.223 from its previous close of 7.171.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 83.18, compared with its close of 83.2225 during the previous trading session.
MCX Gold futures for 5 October 2023 settlement declined 0.25% to Rs 57,527.
The US Dollar index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was down 0.12% to 106.54.
The United States 10-year bond yield added 0.15% to 4.638.
In the commodities market, Brent crude for November 2023 settlement lost 18 cents or 0.19% to $96.37 a barrel.
